Latex vs memory foam: which mattress should you buy?
5 min read · Updated 25 September 2026
How natural latex and memory foam feel, how they handle heat and movement, and who each one suits, explained without jargon.
They feel very different
Memory foam softens with your body heat and slowly sinks around you. People describe it as being held or cradled. When you move, it takes a second or two to return to shape.
Natural latex pushes back. It gives under your shoulders and hips but springs back the moment you move, so it feels buoyant rather than sinking. Turning over takes less effort.
Heat
Latex has an open-cell structure with pinholes through it, so air moves through more easily. If you wake up warm, latex or a spring mattress is usually the better choice. Memory foam holds more heat, which many people like in winter.
Who each one suits
Memory foam suits side sleepers who want pressure taken off their shoulders and hips, and people who like a hugging feel.
Latex suits back and combination sleepers, people who move a lot at night, and hot sleepers.
What about the price?
Natural latex costs more to make, which is why latex mattresses sit at the top of most ranges. It is also long-lasting, which is why our Latex Luxe carries our longest warranty. If budget matters more, a memory foam mattress such as the Memory Firm gives a contouring feel for less.
