Mattress size chart for India: single, diwan, queen and king

Every standard mattress size sold in India in inches and millimetres, which bed each one fits, and how to check your bed before you order.
The short answer
Indian mattresses come in three lengths, 72, 75 and 78 inches, and widths from 30 to 72 inches. A single is 30 or 36 inches wide, a diwan (often called a double) is 42 or 48, a queen is 60, and a king is 66 or 72. Most Indian beds are 72 or 75 inches long, so measure before you assume 78.

Which size for which bed
Single (30″ or 36″ wide): children, hostels, paying-guest rooms and guest beds. A 36″ single is more comfortable for adults.
Diwan or double (42″ or 48″): a diwan, a day bed or one adult who likes room to spread out. Two adults will find 48″ tight.
Queen (60″): the most common bed for couples in Indian homes.
King (66″ or 72″): couples who want space, or a family bed with a child. Check the room can take a 72″ wide bed with space to walk around it.
Measure the bed, not the old mattress
Old mattresses sag and shrink at the edges, so measure the inside of the bed frame or the plywood base from edge to edge, in inches, at the head, middle and foot. Use the smallest number. If your bed does not match a standard size, a custom-size mattress is priced per square foot and fits exactly.
