Pocket springs move one by one; Bonnell springs are linked together. What that means for couples, support, airflow and price.
How they are built
In a pocket spring mattress every coil sits in its own fabric pocket, so each spring moves on its own.
In a Bonnell spring mattress hourglass-shaped coils are joined together with spiral wire, so they move as one unit. It is the classic spring mattress design.
Sharing the bed
Because pocket springs move separately, when one person turns over the other side barely moves. That makes pocket springs the better choice for couples and light sleepers.
A Bonnell core has more bounce and you will feel a partner's movement more.
Airflow and feel
Both are cooler than all-foam mattresses because air moves through the spring core. Bonnell springs feel bouncier and firmer; pocket springs feel more even and contouring.
