The best mattress for hot Indian summers

4 min read · Updated 25 September 2026

Why some mattresses sleep warm, which materials and covers stay cooler, and simple ways to sleep cooler on the mattress you have.

Why mattresses trap heat

Dense foam holds body heat and slows the air moving around you. Memory foam, which softens with warmth, tends to sleep warmest. Covers matter too: thick synthetic quilting holds heat.

Cooler materials

Natural latex has an open-cell structure with pinholes that let air through.

Spring cores are mostly air, so heat escapes easily. Bonnell and pocket springs both help.

Natural and cotton covers such as hemp or glace cotton breathe better than heavy synthetic fabric.

Sleep cooler on any mattress

Use cotton or linen sheets, keep the mattress off the floor so air can move under it, and air it for a few hours when you change the sheets. A breathable waterproof protector keeps the mattress clean without trapping heat like plastic sheets do.
