Mattress thickness guide: 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 inch?

What each mattress thickness is good for, how thickness changes comfort and price, and how to check it will suit your bed.
Thicker is not always better
Extra thickness adds comfort layers, not necessarily more support. A firm 6-inch mattress can support better than a soft 10-inch one. Choose the feel first, then the thickness.
What each thickness suits

Check your bed
Beds with a raised headboard frame or storage boxes often have a lip around the base. Measure its depth: a 10-inch mattress in a bed with a deep lip can sit lower than you expect, and a thin one can sit below the edge. The thickness in millimetres is shown on every product page when you choose it.
